Learning Never Stops at Senegal DigiSchool
Pandemic-driven Shutdown
Like many other countries in Africa and across the globe, Senegal has seen its schools and universities shut their doors on physical learning due to COVID-19. With the impact of the virus changing the face of education everywhere, Internet connectivity has emerged as the most valuable currency for students to keep learning. And to meet this unprecedented challenge, UNESCO launched the Global Coalition for Education in March 2020.
Ensuring the Continuity of Education
As a member of the Coalition, Huawei has pledged to support distance learning opportunities for children and young people affected by school closures. Working with the Ministry of National Education, UNESCO Regional Office for West Africa (Sahel), and the local carrier Sonatel, Huawei is committed to building a resilient, equitable education system in Senegal.
Prior to joining the Coalition, Huawei worked with the Ministry of National Education building smart classrooms in selected schools in Dakar, providing an interactive multimedia-based learning experience. This project will build on that already-established collaboration between Huawei Senegal and the Ministry of National Education.
The project started in August 2020. As the end of 2020, more than 200 key teachers were trained, and 60 schools and about 15,000 students were benefitted from this project. They will in turn support and train other teachers, with the overall aim of benefiting 100,000 students in the country.
